Why Memorize Scripture?
If you’re like me, you might wonder why it’s even important to memorize Scripture. After all, isn’t it enough just to read the Bible? While reading God’s Word is obviously important, there are benefits to memorizing Scripture that make it worth the effort:
1. Knowing Scripture can help when faced with temptation. When we have God’s Word stored up in our heart, we can better resist Satan’s lies (Psalm 119:11). And when we struggle with a particular sin or bad habit, having specific verses to turn to can be a lifesaver. Scripture memorization is a powerful tool that we should all be taking advantage of!
2. Memorizing Scripture can help us fight worry and anxiety (Philippians 4:6-7). When we meditate on God’s promises, we will be better able to trust Him during trials and take our worries captive before they take us captive.
3. Memorizing Scripture can help us better minister to others (Colossians 4:6). When we know God’s Word, it will better equip us to share the Good News with those around us and help meet their spiritual needs.
4. Ultimately, memorizing Scripture is a way of honoring God (Psalm 145:21). When we commit His Word to memory, we declare His truth is worth remembering and that we want to praise His name forever.
