Have you ever tried giving something to God, only to take it back five minutes later?

Yeah, me too.

I’ve told the Lord I was handing over my stress, then spent the next two hours googling solutions. I’ve said I trusted Him with my future while secretly planning my next ten moves. Surrender sounds like this beautiful, holy word—but living it out? That’s a whole different story.

Let’s look at what Paul says in Romans 12:1–2 (ESV):

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

There’s so much packed into these two verses, but here’s the part that always grabs my attention: offer your bodies as a living sacrifice.

A living sacrifice. That’s not a onetime altar moment. It’s an everyday, every-hour, every-choice kind of thing.

And here’s the catch – we’re still alive. We can crawl off that altar anytime we want. And let’s be honest, we often do.

What Does It Mean to Surrender?

Surrendering to God isn’t just about giving Him the “big stuff”—our marriage, our kids, our careers. It’s also about the day-to-day decisions that shape who we’re becoming. It’s saying:

  • “Yes, Lord,” when I feel like saying, “I’ve got this.”
  • “Your way, not mine,” when my pride is shouting for control.
  • “I’ll wait,” when every part of me wants to run ahead.

Paul urges us to offer our bodies – not just our intentions or Sunday morning – but our whole selves. That includes our thoughts, our habits, our emotions, our scrolling thumb, our eating choices, our attitude when someone cuts us off in traffic.

It’s all part of the sacrifice.

But don’t miss the beginning of the verse: “in view of God’s mercy.”

We surrender not because God is demanding, but because He is merciful. We surrender as a response to who He is and what He’s done—not to earn His love, but because He’s already lavished it on us.

The Tug-of-War Inside Us

Let’s be honest, surrender feels scary. Most of us like to hold the reins, even if we’re steering the cart off a cliff.

Why? Because letting go feels like losing control.

But here’s the truth I’ve learned the hard way: when I try to control everything, I usually end up carrying everything.

And it’s heavy.

Surrender isn’t a weakness, it’s wisdom. It’s not giving up; it’s giving over. It’s not failure; it’s freedom. And it’s in that place – when we finally let go – that God does His deepest work in us.

That’s where verse 2 comes in: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”

Transformation starts when surrender begins.

The Mind Game

Here’s something wild: surrender doesn’t begin with behavior. It begins in the mind.

The world tells us, “Do what feels good.”
Jesus says, “Do what brings life.”

The world says, “You’re the boss of your own life.”
Jesus says, “Follow Me.”

Renewing our minds means unlearning the world’s messages and re-learning God’s truth. And that takes time. It’s a process, not a lightning bolt. Some days, you’ll feel you’re moving forward. Other days you’ll crawl. That’s okay. The point is to keep coming back to the altar – even when you’re limping.

So What Does Surrender Look Like, Really?

For me, it looks like this:

  • Spending time with God before I scroll through my to-do list.
  • Saying no to things I want, because they don’t align with what He’s asking.
  • Forgiving someone when I’d rather keep holding that grudge like a safety blanket.
  • Praying, “Change me,” instead of, “Change them.”

It’s not flashy. It’s not Instagram-worthy. It’s quiet obedience in unseen places. But in those moments is where transformation lives.

Let’s Get Real

Where do you struggle to surrender?

Is it your schedule? Your relationships? Your self-worth? That one area you keep locked up like a “Do Not Enter” sign to the Holy Spirit?

I’ve got those too.

But here’s the beautiful truth: God isn’t surprised by our resistance. He’s patient. He knows our hearts. And He keeps inviting us to the altar – not to destroy us, but to make us whole.

So today, can I encourage you to take one step? Just one. Lay one thing down. One fear. One decision. One old habit. Ask God to help you loosen your grip and trust Him with it.

You don’t have to figure it all out. Just come to Him.

That’s where surrender begins.

Study Questions for Reflection:

  1. What does it mean to you personally to be a “living sacrifice”?
  2. What’s one area of your life that’s hardest to surrender?
  3. How have you seen transformation when you’ve chosen to trust God’s will over your own?
  4. What small, practical step can you take today to live a surrendered life?

Closing Prayer:

Lord, help me remember that surrender isn’t about loss – it’s about life. Teach me to trust You with the areas I still try to control. Renew my mind with Your truth. Make my life a living, breathing act of worship to You. And when I forget, gently bring me back to the altar. I want to live for You—fully, freely, and forever. In Jesus name, amen.
