“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Colossians 3:13, NIV).

Hate is heavy. It clings to your heart, poisons your thoughts, and keeps you chained to the very person who hurt you. Forgiveness, on the other hand, feels impossible—especially when the wound runs deep.

Samereh Alinejad, a mother from Iran, understood that weight more than most. Her eighteen-year-old son was stabbed to death in a street fight. She’d already buried one son, and losing another nearly crushed her spirit.

Her son’s killer, Balal, spent seven years in prison awaiting his execution. As the day drew near, Samereh had a dream in which her son appeared, begging her to forgive. She wrestled with it until the very morning of the hanging.

Standing at the gallows, she watched as the noose was placed around Balal’s neck. This was the moment she thought would bring peace. Instead, she called out for his release. The hate that had consumed her vanished, and for the first time in years, she felt free.

Balal’s mother, overwhelmed, fell at Samereh’s feet in gratitude. But Samereh lifted her up and embraced her. Two mothers, once divided by grief, now united by mercy.

Samereh’s story shows us this truth: forgiveness isn’t just about the other person—it’s about your freedom.

Why Hate Holds Us Hostage

Hate feels powerful in the moment. It convinces us that holding onto anger somehow keeps us safe, or maybe even gives us control. But the reality is very different.

  1. Hate Eats Away at Your Heart
Resentment doesn’t just hurt the other person—it corrodes your soul, leaving you restless and bitter.
  2. Hate Pretends to Protect You
We cling to anger because it feels like a shield. But it only keeps us trapped in the past.
  3. Hate Blocks Healing
As long as you nurture hate, you can’t fully step into the peace God offers. Forgiveness is the doorway to healing.

Why Forgiveness Feels So Hard

Even when we know forgiveness is the right choice, it can feel impossible. Why?

  • We Want Justice Now
Like Samereh, we believe punishment will finally give us peace. But true peace only comes from God.
  • We Think Forgiveness Excuses the Wrong
Forgiving doesn’t mean what happened was okay—it means you’re refusing to let it define or destroy you.
  • We Fear Being Hurt Again
Letting go of hate feels vulnerable. But boundaries and forgiveness can exist together.
  • We Forget God’s Forgiveness of Us
Colossians 3:13 reminds us to forgive “as the Lord forgave you.” Remembering the depth of His mercy empowers us to extend it to others.

The Path to Freedom: Steps Toward Forgiveness

If you’re holding onto hate, here are some practical ways to move toward freedom:

Admit the Weight You’re Carrying

Be honest with yourself and with God about the pain. Pretending you’re fine won’t make the bitterness go away.

Pray for Strength You Don’t Have

Forgiveness isn’t natural—it’s supernatural. Ask God to give you the grace to do what feels impossible.

Remember God’s Mercy Toward You

Reflect on the forgiveness you’ve received through Christ. His mercy is the well you draw from to forgive others.

Release the Illusion of Control

Your hate doesn’t control the outcome—it only controls you. Let God be the Judge and trust Him with justice.

Choose Forgiveness Daily

Forgiveness isn’t always a one-time event. Some wounds require choosing mercy again and again until the hate loses its grip.

Embrace the Freedom That Follows

As Samereh discovered, letting go of hate brings peace and release. Forgiveness sets you free.

The Benefits of Forgiveness

Choosing forgiveness doesn’t erase the past, but it transforms your present.

  • Freedom from Bitterness: You’re no longer chained to the wrong that was done to you.
  • Peace of Mind: The endless replay of hurt begins to quiet.
  • Restored Relationships: Forgiveness can open doors to reconciliation, though not always.
  • A Testimony of God’s Grace:  Your story of forgiveness becomes a witness of Christ’s love to others.
  • Closer Walk with God: Nothing blocks intimacy with God like an unforgiving heart.

Is there someone whose actions still haunt you? Are you carrying hate that has weighed you down for too long?

You don’t have to carry it anymore. Forgiveness doesn’t excuse the wrong or erase the pain, but it loosens hate’s grip and makes room for God’s peace.

Choose today to begin releasing that burden. Pray. Take the first step. Let God replace hate with healing.

A Prayer for Today

God, forgiveness is a struggle. You know the hurt I’ve carried and the hate that has weighed me down. But I don’t want to live chained to bitterness any longer. Give me the strength to release this burden and live free in Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Hate keeps you trapped, but forgiveness sets you free. Don’t wait for justice to bring you peace—choose mercy and let God heal your heart.
