“The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand” (Psalm 37:23-24, ESV).

Aiden was in his third year of college, living a dream most athletes only imagine. A rising football star, he had scouts following his every move and a coach who believed he’d be a top draft pick. Everything seemed to be unfolding perfectly.

Until one icy morning, everything changed.

Another driver lost control of his car, colliding with Aiden’s vehicle. Though Aiden survived, his shoulder was badly injured. Surgery and months of physical therapy followed, along with the terrifying question no athlete ever wants to ask: What if I never play again?

During his therapy sessions, Aiden met Brittany, a young woman studying to become a physical therapist. What started as casual conversation soon blossomed into something more. Within a year, Aiden had not only been drafted, sixth overall, but had also proposed to the woman he now called the love of his life.

Looking back, Aiden realized that what felt like a devastating detour was really God’s redirection. “Without the accident, I never would have met Brittany,” he said with a smile. “God sent me down a path I didn’t understand, but I’m so thankful for it now.”

Maybe you’ve faced a detour too. A job that didn’t pan out. A relationship that ended unexpectedly. A health scare that changed your timeline. When life swerves off course, it can feel disorienting, frustrating, even unfair. But Scripture reminds us that even in the detours, God is establishing our steps.

Why Unexpected Detours Shake Us

We like predictability. Plans. Roadmaps that reassure us of where we’re going. But detours? They disrupt everything we thought we knew.

  1. We Fear Lost Time
When plans fall apart, we worry that we’re “behind” or missing out on what should have been.
  2. We Equate Detours With Failure
An unexpected turn feels like proof that we’ve messed up, or that God isn’t paying attention.
  3. We Resist Change
Even if God is redirecting us toward something better, the change itself feels uncomfortable and unwelcome.
  4. We Struggle to See the Bigger Picture
We only see the detour, but God sees the destination. His perspective stretches far beyond what our limited view allows.

What Scripture Teaches About Detours

The Bible is full of stories where God used detours to shape His people’s faith and future:

  • Joseph was sold into slavery, imprisoned, and forgotten before becoming second-in-command in Egypt (Genesis 50:20).
  • Moses spent 40 years in the desert before leading Israel out of Egypt (Exodus 3).
  • Paul was shipwrecked, imprisoned, and opposed at every turn, yet God used those detours to spread the gospel (Acts 27–28).

Every delay, every twist in the road, was not wasted. God used them to redirect, protect, and prepare His people.

How to Trust God Through Life’s Detours

So how do we respond when life doesn’t go the way we planned? Here are some practical, biblical steps:

Acknowledge Your Disappointment

God isn’t threatened by your honesty. Tell Him how you feel about the detour, your fear, sadness, or frustration. David’s psalms show us that lament can be holy.

Remember God’s Character

When the road changes, God doesn’t. He is still faithful, good, and sovereign. Anchor yourself in His unchanging nature.

Look for God’s Hand in the Small Things

Often, detours reveal hidden blessings. A new friendship. A chance to grow. A door you would have missed otherwise.

Stay Obedient Where You Are

You may not understand the detour, but you can still be faithful in the season God has placed you. Keep showing up in prayer, obedience, and trust.

Hold Your Plans Loosely

Proverbs 16:9 reminds us: “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” Detours teach us to release control and let God lead.

The Benefits of Embracing Detours

When you surrender your detours to God, you discover blessings you never expected:

  • Growth in Faith: Trust is strengthened when you rely on God instead of your plans.
  • Unexpected Blessings: Just as Aiden found Brittany, God often brings gifts we wouldn’t have chosen for ourselves.
  • Protection From Harm: Sometimes God’s detours keep us from roads that would have hurt us.
  • A New Perspective: Detours shift our focus from what we think we need to what God knows we need.
  • A Deeper Testimony: Your story of God’s redirection will inspire others facing their own detours.

When You Don’t Understand

There will be times when the “why” behind your detour isn’t revealed right away, or maybe not until heaven. But you can rest in knowing that no path is wasted when your hand is in God’s.

The same God who guided Joseph, Moses, Paul, and Peter is guiding you. Your detour is not the end of your story, it’s part of His.

Are you standing on a road you never expected to travel? Does the path ahead feel confusing or unfair? Instead of resisting, ask God to help you trust Him with the detour.

He may not reveal the full picture today, but He promises to hold your hand every step of the way. And in time, you may look back and say, like Aiden, “I didn’t understand then, but I’m so thankful now.”

A Prayer for Today

Father, thank You for guiding my steps, even when they don’t lead where I expected. Help me to trust You in the middle of detours I don’t understand. Open my eyes to see the blessings You’re weaving into my story and strengthen my faith as I walk with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Unexpected detours are not setbacks; they’re setups for God’s greater plan. Trust Him to use every twist in your journey for your good and His glory.
