And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch’ (Luke 5:4, ESV)

Peter dragged his nets onto the shore as the sun began to rise over the water. His back ached, his hands were raw, and his heart was heavy. He had fished all night—hour after hour of casting and hauling—only to come up empty.

As he washed his nets, thoughts of failure stung his mind. The bills on the kitchen table. His son who needed new shoes. His wife who needed to see the doctor. How could he provide when he couldn’t even bring home a single fish?

Then Jesus arrived. Peter had heard of Him—the Carpenter from Nazareth who healed the sick, cast out demons, and taught with authority. Now this same Teacher stood before him and gave a simple instruction:

“Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”

Peter hesitated. “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything…” The words tasted of frustration and defeat. But then, with a deep sigh, he added, “…but because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

What happened next left him speechless. His nets overflowed with so many fish that the ropes began to tear. He called for help, and soon two boats were sinking under the weight of God’s abundance.

When You Feel Like Giving Up

Peter’s story is our story too. We work, we strive, we push forward with all the energy we have, only to feel like we’re coming up empty.

  • You’ve poured yourself into a marriage that still feels broken.
  • You’ve tried every strategy to get out of debt, yet the bills keep stacking higher.
  • You’ve prayed for years for a prodigal child, and nothing seems to change.
  • You’ve battled the same addiction, only to fall again and again.

It’s exhausting. Like Peter, you wonder if it’s even worth trying again.

Why Trust Feels So Hard When We’re Tired

  1. Weariness Clouds Our Perspective
When we’re tired, we only see what’s failed, not what God can still do.
  2. Past Disappointments Linger
Empty nets from yesterday make us afraid to cast again today.
  3. Fear of Failure Keeps Us Frozen
We’d rather stop trying than risk another heartbreak or setback.
  4. We Forget Who’s Speaking
Peter only saw a Carpenter at first, but the command came from the Creator. Our hope isn’t in the task itself—it’s in the One who calls us to it.

How to “Let Down the Nets” in Faith

So how do we move forward when we feel weary, discouraged, and empty-handed? Here are steps to take when Jesus whispers, “Try one more time.”

Remember Who Is Speaking

Jesus isn’t just another voice with advice—He’s the One who holds all authority in heaven and earth. If He says try again, you can trust His word.

Obey Even When It Doesn’t Make Sense

Peter knew the best fishing happened at night. Casting nets at dawn seemed foolish. But obedience unlocked the miracle. Sometimes God asks us to step out in ways that feel counterintuitive.

Surrender Your Control

Letting down the nets means letting go of your own strategies and inviting Jesus into the process. It’s shifting from “I’ll fix this” to “God, I trust You with this.”

Persevere With Hope

God doesn’t waste your waiting or your effort. Even if results don’t come immediately, your obedience is never in vain.

Expect God’s Provision

Peter didn’t just catch a few fish—he caught more than he could handle. God’s provision is often greater than what we imagine when we surrender to Him.

The Blessings of Trusting God’s Word

When you let down your nets in obedience, you position yourself to experience God’s goodness in powerful ways:

  • Abundance Where There Was Lack: God turns empty nets into overflowing ones.
  • Renewed Faith: Seeing God’s hand at work strengthens your trust for the next step.
  • Peace in the Process: Obedience brings rest, even before results appear.
  • Witness to Others: Peter’s catch wasn’t just for him—others saw God’s power too.
  • Deeper Relationship With Jesus: The miracle drew Peter closer to the Savior.

Choosing Obedience Over Weariness

Peter could have walked away that morning. He could have said, “I’ve tried enough times. I’m done.” But instead, he chose obedience: “Because You say so, I will let down the nets.”

That’s the invitation for you today too. One more prayer. One more act of faith. One more step of obedience—not because you’re strong, but because Jesus is faithful.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, I confess I am weary. I’ve tried and failed so many times, and I feel like my nets are empty. But today, I choose to trust Your Word. Give me the strength to let down the nets one more time. I believe that You will provide in Your way and in Your timing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Obedience in the face of weariness is the seed of miracles. Don’t let empty nets keep you from casting again. Because when Jesus says, “Try one more time,” you can trust that He has abundance waiting for you.
