There are seasons in life when pain feels louder than peace.

Moments when disappointment, fear, emotional exhaustion, and unanswered questions make us wonder where God is in the middle of it all. Sometimes those seasons slowly pull our hearts away from Him without us even realizing it.

That’s what happened to me.

For years, I tried carrying burdens that were too heavy for me. I searched for peace while resisting surrender. Eventually, I learned something life-changing:

Peace is not found in controlling life. It is found in surrendering our lives to Jesus.

When Pain Makes Us Want to Run from God

Pain has a way of testing what we believe about God.

When life hurts, it can feel easier to pull away from Him instead of leaning into Him. Questions come to the surface. Fear grows louder. And disappointment can quietly harden the heart.

There was a season in my life when I felt emotionally exhausted, spiritually distant, and deeply confused. I still believed in God, but I questioned whether He cared about me personally. I looked at the pain around me and wondered why He would allow so much hurt if He loved me.

Instead of bringing my pain to Him, I ran from Him emotionally and spiritually.

Not loudly.

Quietly.

I stopped trusting Him even though I still believed He existed.

Sometimes we do not run from God with our feet. We run from Him with our hearts.

I carried disappointment, fear, and confusion for years while trying to survive on my own strength. But the farther I drifted from Him, the more restless my heart became.

Psalm 34:18 (ESV) says:

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

At the time, I did not fully believe God was near to me.

But looking back now, I can see He never stopped pursuing me even while I was running.

Trying to Control Everything Left Me Exhausted

Control can feel safer than surrender.

At least it did to me.

I thought if I could fix everything, manage every outcome, protect myself from pain, and hold my life together tightly enough, then maybe I would finally feel secure. But the harder I tried to control everything, the more emotionally drained I became.

Because we were never meant to carry life on our own shoulders.

Striving will eventually wear the heart down.

I was exhausted from trying to hold everything together while my emotional health slowly unraveled underneath the surface. I questioned my purpose, struggled with fear, and felt spiritually empty.

What I did not understand then was that peace was never meant to come from control.

It comes from trust.

Matthew 11:28–30 (ESV) says:

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Jesus was never asking me to carry my burdens alone.

He was asking me to bring them to Him.

What Surrender to Jesus Really Means

Surrender can sound frightening at first.

Many people hear the word surrender and think of weakness, loss, or giving up. But surrendering to Jesus is not about losing ourselves. It is about placing our lives into the hands of the One who loves us most.

Surrender means giving up control and trusting God with the parts of life we cannot hold together ourselves.

It means accepting Jesus not only as Savior but also as Lord.

That word changes everything.

Because when Jesus is Lord, we stop trying to sit on the throne of our own lives.

Surrender is not about perfection. It is about trust.

For a long time, I wanted peace without fully letting go. I wanted healing without vulnerability. I wanted God’s comfort without complete dependence on Him.

But true surrender requires honesty.

It requires us to admit:

  • we do not have everything together
  • we cannot save ourselves
  • we desperately need Jesus

Romans 10:9 (ESV) says:

“because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

The more I understood who Jesus truly is, the more my heart softened toward Him.

The Peace I Found When I Stopped Running

Eventually, I reached the point where I could no longer keep running.

I was tired.

Tired emotionally.

Tired mentally.

Tired spiritually.

And honestly, sometimes surrender begins there.

Not in strength.

But in exhaustion.

I finally had to face who Jesus really was and decide whether I truly believed He was the Son of God. I had to stop avoiding Him and fully surrender my life to Him.

And when I did, something unexpected happened.

Peace entered my life.

Not because my circumstances instantly changed.

But because my heart finally stopped fighting Him.

John 14:27 (ESV) says:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

That verse became deeply personal to me.

Because I realized the peace Jesus offers is different from anything the world can give us.

His peace remains even when life still feels uncertain.

Why Surrender Feels So Difficult

Surrender often feels difficult because it asks us to release control.

And honestly, control can become a comfort even when it is hurting us.

We hold tightly to fear, striving, bitterness, pride, self-reliance, or the illusion that we can somehow keep ourselves safe if we try hard enough.

But surrender invites us into something better.

It invites us into dependence on God.

Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV) says:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Trusting God does not always feel easy.

Especially when life hurts.

But surrender teaches us that God’s understanding is greater than our own. His plans are wiser. His love is steadier. And His presence remains even when we cannot see what He is doing.

Jesus Meets Us in Our Weariness

One of the most beautiful things I learned through surrender is this:

Jesus meets us in our weakness.

Not after we become strong enough.

Not after we fix ourselves.

Not after we finally get everything together.

He meets us right in the middle of our exhaustion and brokenness.

God is not waiting for perfect people. He is drawing near to weary hearts.

There were moments I truly believed God had abandoned me. But looking back, I can see His grace was still carrying me even when I could not feel it.

He was patient with me.

Gentle with me.

Faithful to me.

Even while I struggled.

Lamentations 3:22–23 (ESV) says:

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Those verses remind me that God’s mercy does not run out when we struggle.

Peace Comes When We Trust Him

Peace is not found in having every answer.

Peace is found in knowing the One who holds our future.

The more I surrendered my fears, questions, and burdens to Jesus, the more I began experiencing a steadiness in my heart that I had never known before.

I still faced difficult seasons.

I still experienced uncertainty.

But I was no longer carrying everything alone.

Isaiah 26:3 (ESV) says:

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”

That kind of peace cannot be manufactured by the world.

It comes from trusting Jesus.

Surrender Is Not Losing Yourself

One of the greatest misconceptions about surrender is believing it means losing freedom.

But surrendering to Jesus is where freedom begins.

Freedom from striving.

Freedom from carrying impossible burdens.

Freedom from trying to save ourselves.

Freedom from searching for peace in places that can never truly satisfy.

Galatians 5:1 (ESV) says:

“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

Jesus did not come to imprison us. He came to set us free.

And the more we trust Him, the more we discover the beauty of resting in His love instead of relying on ourselves.

Finding Rest in the Hands of Jesus

I still do not have every answer about life.

But surrender changed the direction of my heart.

Instead of running from God, I now run toward Him.

Instead of trying to carry everything myself, I bring my burdens to Him.

Instead of searching for peace in the world, I seek it in His presence.

And through it all, I have learned this:

The safest place for our hearts is in the hands of Jesus.

If you are weary today…

If you feel emotionally exhausted…

If you have been trying to hold your life together on your own…

Or if your heart feels distant from God right now…

Jesus is still inviting you to come to Him.

Not because you have everything together.

But because He loves you.

And maybe surrender is not the end of hope like you feared.

Maybe it is the beginning of healing.
